Friends,
The first real rain came back this week, the actual kind, a full gray afternoon of it, and the country around the Sound turned over in about an hour. The gutters ran for the first time since June. This is my working weather, and it is the weather the book happens in, because it is when the book got written. It is also the start of the fixing season, when the broken things come back indoors, and there is a piece on all of it below.

When the Rain Comes Back
September brings the rain back, and the whole region turns over with it. It is my working weather, and it is the weather my first novel happens in, because it is the weather I wrote it in.

- Estate Sale Season June brings the estate sales out along the Sound. I go for the small broken machines, and I come home with something harder to price, the arrangement of a whole life laid out on card tables.
- August in Gault Mills Late August in the town I made up. The river is down to its gravel, the evenings are coming in earlier, and everybody is waiting on the wet half of the year to start.
